That’s right folks, today’s Where in the World Wednesday is featuring none other than celebrity hot spot–Lake Como, Italy. Located in Lombardy, which is a norther region of Italy that is also home to Milan. Lake Como itself is the 3rd largest lake in Italy after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. It has been a popular destination for the rich and famous since roman times and continues today with noted residence such as: George Clooney, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Madonna.

The true draw to this Italian destination is it’s beauty. Whether you want to experience wildlife, landscapes or water sports, being outside in Lake Como is a must. With over 100 miles of shoreline this is one lake that can’t be beat. Many people find it an enjoyable day trip and stay in nearby cities such as Bellagio and Menaggio. Como is the largest city on the lake and it is surrounded by medieval cathedrals and Romanesque basilicas. There are also large concentrations of villas and palaces, hence the whole celebrities and royalty visiting.

One tip is to avoid the shopping areas on Saturdays. They can become extremely busy and crowded with lines out the door at even the highest end stores. Other highly enjoyable Lake Como attractions are the delicious food and restaurant options as well as operas and concerts at the Teatro Sociale. You can even do day trip stop surrounding farms to pick up fresh foods. Many people rent houses so picking up these fresh ingredients to cook with your fellow travelers is a must!

Lake Como is not just an attraction for travelers, but film makers as well. Many films have used the lake as their location. Some of which are Ocean’s 12, which must have been nice for Clooney, since he owns a home here. As well as Casino Royale and Star Wars attack of the clones.
