Cape Cod, Massachusetts

If you are looking for a great getaway, Cape Cod Massachusetts should definitely be at the top of your list. This great beach destination is fun for the whole family with museums, shopping, restaurants and much more. Let’s learn a little bit about this small strip of land located off the coast of MA.

When we think of great beaches we immediately think of tourism, but this small town has a strong history and one that has kept people coming back ever since the 1600s. Located just 55 miles to the southeast of Boston, Cape Cod stretches for 40 miles of shoreline. It is an island off of the Cape Cod canal in the Atlantic Ocean. This is a major attraction for people coming from all over the east coast as well as the rest of the United States, Canada and Europe. It is a perfect summer holiday retreat whether you stay for a weekend or a month.

Some of the first Europeans to stop by Cape Cod were the Vikings in the 1000 A.D. The rest of the Europeans (Spanish, English) started showing up again in the 1500s and 1600s. Cape Cod was actually the first piece of America that the Pilgrims saw before they made their way up the coast to Plymouth. It was settled by the Pilgrims around 1630 and along with the great amount of help from the local Native American tribes were taught that the farming of the land was bad due to the poor soil quality. From here the Pilgrims were taught to fish and whale the area for greater  return than farming would give them. Later industries to come out of the area were Cranberry bogs in the 1800s and later that same century was shipping.

Because of the popularity of Martha’s Vineyard, tourists started coming to the area around 1835. From here it hasn’t slowed down at all. Cape Cod has 14 light houses, more than any other county in the United States. You can also take a tour of world famous Cape Cod potato chip factory in Hyannis. Don’t miss the many festivals put on throughout the summer like the the clam chowder fest.
