A great part about learning the travel industry, is finding out about great travel opportunities that I had no idea existed. While working on my baby, AKA this blog, the other day consultant Connie suggested that I look into Fantasy Fest in Key West, Florida. So I did a little research.
This street party was founded in 1979 by business owners Tony Falcone and Bill Conke who wanted to drum up some business to the small Floridian Island. It has now escalated into a 10 day celebration which includes: balls, parades, costume competitions, AIDS fundraisers, costume parties and much much more. This event has grown so large that it even rivals Marde Gras in New Orleans. This year it will be celebrated from October 23rd through November 1st. The event comes with a specific theme each year, with this years being “All Hallows Intergalactic Freak Show.”
A quote from the website seems to sum up the whole event, “Fun-loving revelers from around the globe bring their creativity and imaginations as they descend upon Key West each year in October for 10 days filled with costuming, parades, libations and excitement!”
This event is not necessarily for every traveler, although everyone is welcome. It is a very freeing, fun event that is based around a great cause. This could be a great time to travel with friends, enjoy a bachelor/bachelorette party or an escape for fall break for the college student.
And like always I love to provide a quote from someone in our office who has experienced the event. Connie says, “It’s a party like you never seen before, thousands of people partying for 10 nights with nonstop parades with people of all walks of life on a mile by 4 mile island living, being crazy and letting their souls be free. It’s not for the faint of heart…..Mardi Gras on steroids”
